247 A US State Department official has resigned in protest over Washington’s decision to increase military support for Israel, claiming the USbacked war in Gaza would lead to more suffering for Israelis and Palestinians.
Josh Paul, who served as director of the State Department’s Office of PoliticalMilitary Affairs, announced his resignation in a statement posted online Wednesday. He expressed concern that President Joe Biden’s administration was repeating the historic mistakes made by Washington over decades. “What Israel is doing, and the US support for this approach, as well as maintaining the occupation status quo, will only lead to more suffering for both the Israeli and Palestinian people,” Paul wrote.
He added that he feared that they would repeat the same mistakes of previous decades and that he refused to be part of this development any longer. He stressed that the Biden administration’s “blind support of one side” led to policy decisions that were “shortsighted, destructive, unfair and contradictory to the values we publicly defend.”
Paul, who has been involved in coordinating arms deliveries to US allies for more than 11 years, said: “I am leaving today because I believe that given the current trend of continued indeed expanded and accelerated supply of lethal weapons to Israel, I have reached the limit of this agreement.” (*With information from Al Jazeera)
