The estate of late quarterback Dwayne Haskins has reached a settlement with the driver, owner and broker of the dump truck that struck and killed the former NFL star, according to an attorney representing Haskins’ widow.
The details of the settlement were not disclosed, according to ESPN.
Haskins was fatally hit by a dump truck on a Florida freeway in April 2022. In March of this year, a lawsuit was filed on behalf of the Haskins surviving family.
The lawsuit alleged that the driver of the dump truck was speeding, driving carelessly, and loading cargo in excess of the legal weight limit. It also identified the individual owner of the 1994 Kenworth truck and the driver’s trucking company.
Rick Ellsley, the attorney for Haskins’ widow Kalabrya Haskins, told ESPN that other settlements had previously been reached with “various other parties.” However, he added that “the case continues to be heard in Broward County Circuit Court against several other defendants.”

The lawsuit also accused two people – Joey Smith and Meriem Yassine – of drugging Haskins “in order to blackmail and rob him, resulting in him being seriously injured and/or killed.” Smith and Haskins knew each other before his death, but Yassine had no existing relationship with the quarterback, Ellsley told .
Haskins, 24, was struck by at least two vehicles on a Florida highway on April 9, 2022. It was previously reported that a lone dump truck hit the quarterback on the highway, but he was also “partially” hit by another vehicle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol accident report, made available to at the time.
It remains unclear what Haskins was doing as he walked down a freeway near the Fort Lauderdale airport.
One possible clue came from an emergency call from Kalabrya, who told the operator that her husband’s car was stranded and that he was walking to find a gas station.
In a panicked 911 call to , Kalabrya explained that she called from Pittsburgh about 10 minutes after speaking with her husband on April 9, 2022.
According to police, Haskins attempted to cross Interstate 595 in Fort Lauderdale around 6:30 a.m
She explained Haskins told her he was stranded on a freeway in Broward County, Florida, looking for gas. He allegedly told Kalabrya that he would call her when he was done, but she never received a call.
In a separate 911 call, a witness said she saw a man being hit by a dump truck.
Haskins, a former first-round pick from Washington, struggled in his first two years in the league and was axed in 2021 before signing a one-year, $850,000 deal to play as a substitute in Pittsburgh.
Haskins earned over $14 million in the NFL after an impressive career at Ohio State.
