Steph Curry starts opposition to housing for the poor near his home

NBA star Steph Curry has officially spoken out against the development of a series of affordable housing units to be built behind his multi-million dollar mansion.

The Golden State Warriors star and his wife Ayesha sent a letter to the city of Atherton, which opposed the project that would see up to 16 three-story townhouses built in the middle of his affluent California neighborhood.

The Currys said the housing project would pose a threat to the “safety and privacy” of them and their children, nothing the location and height of the townhouse occupants snide glimpses into their $31 million mansion.

Her neighbors have also opposed the project, with some saying there is no point in building affordable homes in a city where single acres sell for $8 million.

In a letter sent to the city Jan. 18, the Currys expressed concern about the new homes “popping up” over theirs.

“As residents of Atherton…we have been following the updates to the home features with particular interest at property 23 Oakwood,” they wrote.

“We’re hesitant to add to the ‘not in our backyard’ rhetoric (literally), but we wanted to send a note ahead of today’s meeting. Safety and privacy for us and our children continues to be our top priority and one of the top reasons we chose Atherton as our home.’

At the very least, the Currys requested that plans for the new homes include higher fences and sprawling landscaping that would block views of their property.

Atherton City Council decided to develop the property behind the Currys after coming under pressure to comply with the state’s Affordable Housing Plan, which will develop 348 units over the next eight years in communities of varying income levels.

The city chose the building at 23 Oakwood Boulevard, the 1.52-acre lot adjacent to Currys’ at the request of property owner David Arata.

Arata inherited the property from his mother nearly three years ago and said the townhouses would resemble a “little village” rather than an apartment complex, as some critics have characterized it.

“It would be more like a small village than a big apartment building,” he told the Almanac. “living element” when you mention people snapping; They think it’s going to be low income and it’s going to be massive buildings clinging together.

On January 31, the city council will finally vote on the project.

In their letter, the Currys supported the housing program but asked Atherton to build the units elsewhere.

“We kindly ask the city to adopt the new housing element without involving 23 Oakwood,” they wrote. “Should that not be enough for the state, we are asking the city to commit to investing in much higher fencing and landscaping to block the view of our family’s property.”
