Stocker: “The decreasing number of asylum applications proves once again: the asylum brake works”

In January, there was a 40% drop in asylum applications compared to the previous month.

Vienna (OTS) – “The January asylum application figures prove once again: the brake on asylum is working. The number of applications is massively reduced, our system is lightened. And not without reason: the abolition of the asylum visa from Serbs to Tunisians and Indians, the intensive border controls, “Operation Fox” and the Schengen veto form a set of effective measures against irregular migration to Austria. The facts and figures are clear here and cannot be distorted for untruths. Asylum pressure is subsiding – you can count on Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner. With these facts, the mirror of failure is pointed at the radicalized FPÖ under Herbert Kickl in particular: because with his policy destructive opposition, the FPÖ achieved absolutely nothing,” said People’s Party general secretary and security spokesman, Christian Stocker, of recently published asylum statistics.

“In January, there was a 40% drop in asylum applications compared to the previous month. At the beginning of February, 91,553 people were receiving basic services, around 55,000 of whom were displaced by the war in Ukraine. If you subtract those displaced from war, there are around 6,500 fewer people in basic services than in 2019 under then-interior minister Kickl. This is further evidence that Kickl was unsuited as Home Secretary. As a politician, you need intellect and the necessary intuition. None of this applies to Kickl. All he can do is juggle empty, radical slogans and draw attention to himself with verbal gaffes,” emphasizes Stocker.
