A storm on Monday evening, December 25, killed a woman in eastern Australia, where around 120,000 households are without power, authorities said on Tuesday.
A 59-year-old woman died after a tree fell in gusty winds in the Gold Coast city region, emergency services officer Jaye Newton said. “It was like a disaster zone, there were trees all over the road,” he told reporters.
The storm knocked out power lines around Brisbane, Queensland's regional capital, said local power utility Energex, which noted “catastrophic and widespread damage on a cyclone scale.” “More than 800 power lines down, 120,000 customers without power, it will take days to restore service,” the company wrote on X.
The Australian Weather Service is forecasting another severe storm episode on Tuesday with gusty winds, hailstones and heavy rain. They have issued a flood warning for a river about 40 kilometers from the Gold Coast.
