As millions of Americans head to airports over the June 19 holiday weekend, many are grappling with serious travel issues — including hundreds of flight cancellations and thousands of delays.

The Federal Aviation Administration had imposed a ground delay program at Newark Liberty International Airport that resulted in a delay of more than two hours, according to the FAA website. There will be an additional ground delay at Philadelphia International Airport, averaging 45 minutes.

To the west, thunderstorms are causing additional ground delay at Denver International Airport, with delays measuring nearly two hours.

As of 6:05 p.m. ET, the Flight Aware tracking site lists more than 6,000 flight delays in the United States and more than 500 flight cancellations. The website shows the three major New York City airports with the most cancellations.

Data from the Transportation Security Administration shows a surge in passengers screened at American airports this week, including more than 2.7 million on Thursday. This number exceeded the number of passengers in 2019 before the pandemic.

TSA officials checked another 2.7 million on Sunday, also up from 2019 levels.

The June 19 holiday combined with Father’s Day and pent-up travel demand should contribute to the increase.
