The 80s are back – at least according to the music charts.
Metallica’s heavy metal epic Master of Puppets topped the global charts this week after being featured in an episode of Netflix’s Stranger Things, set in the 1980s.
The 8-minute, 38-second title track from the band’s 1986 album currently sits at the top of the iTunes rock chart and #29 overall on iTunes, alongside many newly released hits.
The guitar-heavy single was used during a key scene featuring the character Eddie in the season four finale.
Show creators Matt and Ross Duffer wrote the scene with the exact song in mind, the show’s music supervisor Nora Felder said in an interview with Variety.

“It was one of those ‘It has to be this song’ moments again,” Felder said. “This part of the story was to be a pivotal and particularly hair-raising scene in which Eddie heroically fought the fight of his life. I think the Duffer Brothers felt it was a clear choice to play ‘Master of Puppets’ during the extended scene.”
The Headbanger is the second ’80s song to skyrocket the music charts after making it onto the show’s fourth season soundtrack.
Over on Spotify, Kate Bush’s 1985 hit “Running Up That Hill” occupies a coveted #1 spot on the US Top 50 list after being featured on Season 4 of Stranger Things. “Master of Puppets” is not far behind. It is currently clocked in at number 12.
Bush’s hit was featured prominently in the first episode of season four, when anxious character Max listens to the British singer on her portable cassette player.
