SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 3, 2024 /PRNewswire/ –Strava, the leading digital community for active people with more than 120 million athletes, today announced the release of Year In Sport: The Trend Report, its report on sports trends of the year highlights global trends among active people by generation. It's no surprise that Generation Z's behaviors and habits differ from those of other generations, but they also express different motivations, barriers and interests when it comes to physical activity.

Strava releases the Year In Sport Trend Report, revealing what makes and breaks motivation across generations

For this highly anticipated report, Strava conducted a global survey of 6,990 active people from both the global Strava community of more than 120 million athletes and a random sample of people active on and off the Strava platform. The results, combined with Strava's 2023 activity data, provide new and unique insights into the trends shaping the world of training and exploration and provide a hint of what we can expect this year.

Across generations, Strava athletes say the main reason they engage in physical activity is social connection. More than half of Strava athletes say they are more motivated when their friends or family members exercise, and 77% of Generation Z athletes say they feel more connected to others when they do Strava's activities see. Your friends or family on Strava. At the bottom of the list of motivators? Celebrities and influencers? even for Generation Z and Millennials.

Generation Z is also the most social generation and is 29% more likely than Millennials to exercise with another person at least some of the time. This may be due in part to a healthy competitive spirit, as members of Generation Z are 31% less likely than their Millennial or Generation Y counterparts to engage in physical activity primarily for health reasons, with the goal being athletic achievement to provide.

When it comes to barriers to exercising and maintaining a regular routine, more than two-thirds of athletes of all generations cite lack of time due to work demands as the biggest barrier. Still, haven't job demands stopped Generation Z from achieving their fitness goals? 39% of Gen Z athletes registered on Strava started a new job and 30% moved in 2023, but they are 32% more likely to be in better physical shape than last year other generations.

“We know that Generation Z’s behavior reflects their values and the impact of living in an increasingly digital world, which for this group means ultimately embracing activism, community and relationships,” said Zipporah Allen, Chief Commercial Officer on Strava. Over the past year, we've found that Generation Z is the biggest source of community growth through new clubs on Strava. They have also contributed to the increase in the practice of sports such as running, although they are the ones who have the most difficulty maintaining regularity. This shows that exercise will be a core value for this generation, which is why they are already using Strava as an important platform to stay motivated and connected with others.

Although the connection is global, other key motivators and barriers have been identified among working people:

  • Pets go out with us: 76% of Strava-registered athletes who have pets say their furry friends help them go outside when they otherwise wouldn't? and that training with your pet is more fun.
  • Safety and household responsibilities can be barriers to physical exercise: On Strava, men are 13% more likely than women to cite household duties as an obstacle. Women are 9% more likely than men to say there is a lack of safe places to exercise.
  • Climate change affects our movement habits: 75% of athletes registered on Strava said extreme heat affected their training plans in 2023? and 27% poor air quality.
  • Playlists are a reliable training partner, but they can lack variety: 43% of Gen X athletes registered on Strava say they have been listening to the same workout music for years.
