According to data collected by HelloSafe, in 2021 we found that the number of subscribers to pay TV in Quebec (66%) was lower than that of subscribers to VOD platforms (79%).

“This is a complete reversal since four years earlier, in 2018, 79% of Quebecers subscribed to pay television, compared to just 51% for streaming platforms,” the study said.

Netflix remains the most popular platform in La Belle province, with almost half of internet users (51%) subscribed to it. Among the most popular websites among Quebecers are Prime Video (34%), Disney + (24%) and Club Illico (14%), followed by Crave and ICI Tou TV Extra (8%).

In Canada, the video-on-demand industry experienced a meteoric rise, with revenue increasing 244% between 2018 ($0.9 billion) and 2023 ($3.11 billion). “These revenues are expected to nearly double again by 2027, with estimated revenue by then reaching $5.21 billion,” HelloSafe added.

The study was conducted using sources such as JustWatch, Statista and Laval University.
