In Changsha, China, in the southern province of Hunan, you can indulge in a very special “delicacy” at the local market: grilled ice cubes. A street vendor offers the bizarre creation as a “traditional” delicacy.
A video shows the chef rotating ice cubes on the grill and seasoning them with pepper, olive oil and sesame seeds. The retailer then places the ice cubes in a snack box and delivers them to customers. According to local media, the ice cubes can be enjoyed “slightly burnt or soft”.
The seller, who advertises the ice cubes as a “snack specialty from the northeast of the country”, charges 15 yuan (the equivalent of two euros) for them. In any case, Chinese food experts don’t pay much attention to the supply. “This is not a dish made by chefs,” explains a representative from Heilongjiang Landmark Food Brand Identification.
