O’Connell is best known for his choreographic work on the 1992 film Strictly Ballroom, which was directed by longtime collaborator and friend Baz Luhrmann.

In an interview with The National Film and Television Achieve, O’Connell spoke about his first meeting with Luhrmann at King’s Cross in Sydney.

O’Connell said he compared his first meeting with Luhrmann to a blind date.
Baz needed a choreographer for a low-budget music clip he directed that had a budget of just $2,000.
“I remember visiting him at his home in Kings Cross. “I thought he looked a little crazy, and he thought I was a little crazy, too,” O’Connell said.
“His apartment didn’t have any furniture, so we just sat on the floor and talked about the video clip like the budget was two million dollars instead of two thousand.”
