Strike notice at Düsseldorf airport

The warning strike is due to end on Saturday night. 700 jobs are considered at risk. Berlin airport was already grounded on Wednesday.

A day-long warning strike began at Düsseldorf Airport on Friday morning. The information was confirmed by a spokesman for the Verdi union. The union called on the 700 workers of baggage and aircraft carrier Aviapartner to the strike, which began at 3:30 am and is due to end at 12:30 pm on Saturday night. About half of all flights at the airport have already been canceled for Friday, the spokesman said.

Aviapartner has a market share of around 75 percent at Düsseldorf Airport. In terms of passenger volume, the airport is the largest in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the third largest in the country.

The background to the refusal is a reallocation of handling tasks, in which Aviapartner had no chance. As a result, 700 jobs are at risk, Verdi said. Aviapartner is now turning down a social plan with compensation for employees threatened with job loss.

Alert strikes by employees of the airport company, groundhandling services and aviation security in Berlin had already paralyzed passenger traffic at BER Airport on Wednesday. With the action, Verdi wanted to increase the pressure on the bosses before the next negotiations.
