Study: US provides most aid

According to one study, the United States is the clear leader when it comes to supporting Ukraine. Since the start of the war a year ago, the US has pledged just over 73.1 billion euros to support Ukraine, and the EU has pledged 54.9 billion euros, according to a study published today by Kiel. Institute for the World Economy (IfW). Military support gained importance over time.

“America leads the way, Europe follows”

“Since the beginning of the war, support for Ukraine has followed a pattern: the US is leading the way, Europe is following,” said IfW, which has been recording data on pledged aid from 40 countries in the Ukraine Support Tracker since last year. past, in a transmission. At the end of the previous year, the European Union had overtaken the US in its global commitments. In the meantime, however, the US has clearly taken the lead again with aid announced in December of €37 billion.

Germany clearly ahead in Europe

Within the European Union, Germany provides the most bilateral aid (EUR 6.15 billion), followed by Poland (EUR 3.56 billion) and France (EUR 1.67 billion). Thanks to humanitarian aid, Austria, which does not provide any military aid, is at least in the center of Europe with EUR 630 million in support.

Regarding economic output, the three Baltic States and Poland provide by far the greatest support to Ukraine. It is followed by the USA in fifth place.

Only a fraction of the inflation aid in their own countries

According to the study, European aid to Ukraine is often just a fraction of what governments have spent to cushion inflation and the energy crisis in their own country.

“The hesitation of Europeans in the first year of the war is a remarkable phenomenon, especially as financial resources can be mobilized quickly. This is shown, for example, by the amount of financial help governments are providing to cushion the energy price shock in their own country,” explained Christoph Trebesch, head of the team that created the Ukraine Support Tracker.
