Stunning moment: A giant thresher shark leapt out of the sea, stunning wildlife spotters hoping to spot dolphins off the Welsh coast.
The shark, which leaped from the water near New Quay, Ceredigion, is estimated to be 16 feet in length.
The stunning image was captured by boatman Joshua Pedley, known locally as ‘The Wildlife Man’, who was conducting an hour-long dolphin-watching tour at the time.
Mr Pedley said: “I couldn’t believe it.” “I quickly set up my camera and zoomed in on where she jumped from and then jumped two more times.”
Writing about a local wildlife group, he added, “We saw a huge shark on our boat trip.”

“This is a thresher shark, one of the simplest and finest pieces of fish-based engineering there is.”
“With a tail as long as its body, this beast is not only huge but also absolutely gorgeous.” We estimate it was probably between five and six meters long.”
Thresher sharks are active predators that use their tails as a weapon to stun their prey. They are rarely sighted in the UK and are usually found in North America and Asia.
The species is currently listed as “Vulnerable” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
