Subway derails on F train in Brooklyn

NEW YORK – Emergency responders are at the scene of a subway derailment in Brooklyn.

It happened around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday on the F train at the West 8th Street station in Coney Island, the MTA said.

No injuries have been reported so far. The FDNY is working to remove the 37 passengers from the train.

The fire department announced that a wheel on the fourth carriage of the train had come off the tracks.

Video from the scene shows trains upright on the tracks and firefighters on the platform.

F trains are late in both directions.

New York City Transit announced the following service changes:

  • The last stop for the F trains heading to Coney Island is Kings Highway or Avenue X
  • Some F trains run on the D Line in both directions between Coney Island and Stillwell Avenue and West 4th-Washington Square
  • For service to and from Coney Island/Stillwell Avenue, customers should use the D/N/Q trains. The B68 bus should be used for service to and from Neptune Avenue. For travel to and from West 8th Street-New York Aquarium, use the Q train
  • G trains run with delays in both directions

Robert Paaswell, a civil engineer at City College, told CBS New York's Dana Tyler that there are several possible causes for a derailment on an elevated line.

“Something in the chains. The chains could be displaced or a chain could be broken. It could be weather related or postponed. “It could be a bad wheel on a car, and a wheel could have come loose,” Paaswell said. “It could have been something where the train driver either stopped suddenly or started suddenly, causing some carriages to crash together.”

The derailment came less than a week after a collision on Line 1 resulted in a derailment and dozens of injuries.
