“I didn’t know I broke my neck swinging [la tête]. I would just spin my head in circles, do headbangs and so on. And I broke my neck,” Irish singer Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, known by her stage name CMAT, told the BBC on Sunday.
The 27-year-old singer, who shook her head violently to the rhythm of the song, only realized the injury shortly after losing her voice due to a collapse of her larynx.
At the time of the incident, the Irish singer, who had won Ireland’s Choice Music Prize for Best Album of the Year, was on tour.
“Throughout the tour I broke it little by little,” she added, according to the BBC. My larynx collapsed. It twisted and my voice box wouldn’t close, so I lost my voice for a month.
While she’s far from the only singer to have suffered neck and neck injuries, voice physiotherapist Nikki Franklin nevertheless described the “extreme” CMAT injuries as “quite unique,” confiding to the British media.
“Singers are athletes in that small area of their neck, their throat and their larynx. We see them using their bodies in different ways and putting a lot of pressure on that area,” she reportedly added.
Fortunately, the singer announced her return to the stage, stating that she was already healed.
