Super Bowl ‘blasphemous’ jacket: Damar Hamlin didn’t want to ‘disrespect’ anyone

Accused of blasphemy after wearing a Jesus jacket to the Super Bowl, Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin claimed he didn’t mean to hurt or disrespect anyone, according to a statement on Twitter.

Hamlin competed in the NFL Grand Finals between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. The athlete, who suffered cardiac arrest in the middle of a game last January, was honored at the start of the game. The first responders who gave him a heart massage were also present.

However, the jacket Damar Hamlin wore stole the show. A picture of Jesus was printed on the back of the garment with the inscription “forever”.

Ex-star running back Adrian Peterson responded to the situation by calling the blazer “blasphemous”.

“You should thank God young man,” he wrote on Instagram. It’s blasphemy! I find it disrespectful.”

The post has since been changed. In the update, Peterson says he was able to chat with Hamlin to “chat like men.”

“I want to make it clear that I am the last person to judge others. It was never my intention. However, I found the jacket really disrespectful and felt the need to share it,” he explains.

Damar Hamlin returned to the controversy on Twitter. “After speaking to my parents, I understood why my coat shocked some people,” he wrote. It was never my intention to hurt people. For me it was abstract art. It says “Eternal” to show my eternal gratitude to my Savior.”
