fruits and Vegetables were limited to UK purchases. This measure was taken by some supermarkets, who began trying to discourage highdemand purchases from consumers. The reason is defensible due to what they call “supply challenges,” a time that occurs due to the weather at this time of year.
The climatic conditions bring lower temperatures, floods and heavy rains that affect both southern Europe and the northern region of the African continent. Southern Spain was also hit by bad weather this time. Therefore, agricultural production declined during this period.
Asda, one of the UK’s largest supermarket chains, said they were facing challenges so that the ideal supply can be optimally achieved. Crops in the region have been affected by weather conditions.
UK sets purchase limit
The announcement was published last Tuesday (21), stating that the country is facing a major shortage of tomatoes. Subsequently, the absence was also confirmed for other vegetables and fruits, so trade had to take measures to limit the purchase of these products. Peppers also stopped being cultivated by farmers during heavy rains.
They limited purchases to three of each fruit and vegetable, allowing people to buy the fresh produce even during shortages. Starting this week, these limits will apply to cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower and raspberries.
Information claims the shopping restrictions could last for weeks, pointing out that supermarkets are working with farmers to ensure consumers still have what they can buy.
