Surprised by the Wings, the Bruins suffer a rare defeat

Did the Boston Bruins players celebrate their playoff qualifiers a little too much on Saturday night?

The question arises when we see the poor start to the game that allowed the Detroit Red Wings to win 5-3 at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The day before, the “Oursons” had defeated the “Wings” in their homeland. That win and a loss to the New York Islanders formalized the Massachusetts club’s participation in Spring Dance 2023.

The Bruins were outplayed in the opening moments of their matchup of the day and the Red Wings scored the first four goals. The best team in the National Hockey League (NHL) then woke up, but it was too little too late.

It was Quebec’s Alex Chiasson who scored the opening goal in the first period. He capitalized on a numerical advantage and beat Jeremy Swayman on a throw return.

Chiasson scored his second goal in as many games against the Bruins. It was also his fourth point in five games since signing an NHL contract with the Red Wings on March 3. The Montreal native began his 2022-2023 season in November after accepting a professional tryout with the Grand Rapids Griffins, an American League formation.

However, Moritz Seider scored the goal of the day. Undermanned, the Red Wings defenseman fumbled and put the puck behind Swayman with a great backhand.

Dylan Larkin, Adam Erne and Andrew Copp (empty net) were the other scorers for the winners. In the Bruins camp, Matt Grzelcyk, Jake DeBrusk and David Pastrnak found a way to beat goaltender Ville Husso in the second half of that duel.
