What will Italians remember in 2023? This emerges from the year-end survey conducted by the Demopolis Institute, led by Pietro Vento, which analyzed the last 12 months in the memory of public opinion using a national sample of 2,000 respondents. The most frequently mentioned news event is the murder of Giulia Cecchettin and the resulting movement of opinion against violence against women: 60% say this. For over 50%, the year that ended was characterized above all by persistent inflation with rising costs of living and extreme climatic events, starting with the floods in Romagna. More than a third of citizens also mention the capture and subsequent death of Cosa Nostra leader Matteo Messina Denaro.

In politics, for 54% of Italians, 2023 was marked by the progressive consolidation of the role of Giorgia Meloni. 4 out of 10 respondents mention the death of Silvio Berlusconi, 25% the surprising arrival of Elly Schlein at the head of the Democratic Party with victory in the primaries. For over 80% of Italians surveyed by the Demopolis Institute, the year 2023 was, worldwide, the violent terrorist attack carried out by Hamas and the violent response of Israel with the explosion of the conflict in the Gaza Strip. 66% recall the continuation of the war in Ukraine, while around a third point to the growing international weight of the Brics states (a group of countries consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), which are increasingly in competition with the West stands bloc consisting of the United States and Europe. 33% emphasize the large-scale use of artificial intelligence. The Premier is also the most mentioned in the Personality of the Year category, followed by Jannik Sinner, the symbol of the rebirth of Italian tennis, named by 48%. The predominant state of mind of Italians at the end of 2023 is uncertainty, cited by 51% of respondents, which outweighs hope and the feeling of fatigue reported by more than a third of Italians today.
