The investigation into a suspected “terrorist attack” in Belgium is progressing. Seven people, five Belgian nationals, one Turk and one Bulgarian, were arrested, the federal prosecutor said.
These seven people were arrested on Monday evening during a dragnet search by the jihadist movement against radicalized young people. Most are in their twenties. The federal prosecutor announced eight arrests on Tuesday morning. One of the suspects was released.
Antwerp and Brussels
The arrests were made in connection with two ongoing investigations in Brussels and Antwerp, two files in which there was talk of a planned attack and which according to prosecutors contained “connections between them”. The potential targets of these terrorist projects have not been determined at this time.
Four arrest warrants were issued by the investigating judge in Antwerp on Wednesday. They relate to acts of “participating in the activities of a terrorist group”, “preparing to commit a terrorist offence”, “sending a message with intent to incite the commission of a terrorist offence” and “attempted assassination in a terrorist context”. . , according to the same source.
In the case being investigated in Brussels, three other suspects have been detained, charged only with “participation in the activities of a terrorist organization,” prosecutors say. Finally, a suspect is also charged with “preparing to commit a terrorist offence” and “distributing a message with intent to incite the commission of a terrorist offence”. The seven detained suspects will appear next Monday in the Council Chamber, the court responsible for overseeing pre-trial detention.
