Suspected Yanomami genocide in Brazil

The Yanomami people are experiencing a humanitarian crisis. The role of members of the Bolsonaro government will also be examined.

Faced with a humanitarian crisis among the Yanomami indigenous people, the Federal Police of Brazil launched an investigation into allegations of genocide, environmental crimes and lack of assistance, among other things. The investigation was launched by order of the Ministry of Justice, according to a police statement released on Wednesday.

In this sense, it is worth investigating whether members of the former government of former President Jair Bolsonaro or illegal miners are responsible for the difficult situation of the Yanomami.

malnutrition and malaria

According to the Ministry of Health, more than a thousand Yanomami with serious health problems, such as malnutrition and malaria, were removed from the indigenous region and treated in recent days. The current government of Bolsonaro’s successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, had already declared a health emergency among the Yanomami.

The territory of the Yanomami in the states of Roraima and Amazonas is one of the largest protected areas for indigenous peoples in Brazil with almost ten million hectares. More than 30,000 Yanomami live there. Former President Bolsonaro defended the exploitation of the Amazon region and wanted to allow gold mining in indigenous areas. Prospectors use mercury to mine gold, polluting the water in the process. According to Agência Brasil, 570 Yanomami children have died from malnutrition in recent years.

Lula announced new policies and measures against malnutrition and dismissed 54 employees of the Funai Indigenous Authority and the Ministry of Health after a trip to visit the indigenous people on Saturday.
