Ms. Plante will be a member of the Local and Regional Government Advisory Group along with 19 other elected officials. Among them are the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, the mayor of Rabat, Morocco, Asmaa Rhlalou and the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo.

The group, made up of 15 local elected officials from five continents and five national elected representatives, has the “mission to strengthen the participation of local and regional authorities in intergovernmental and national planning processes that will lead to the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” and the new UN urban agenda,” we can read in a press release published on Monday by the city of Montreal.

“My participation in the UN Advisory Group on Local and Regional Authorities will allow Montreal to be inspired by best practices and support the ambitious decisions that need to be made around the world to minimize the impact of climate change on the population,” said Mayor Plante in a statement press release.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres founded the group at an initial meeting with the group’s 20 members on October 6.

“As we consider how to make multilateral institutions more effective and address the current and future challenges facing our societies and our planet, we need the perspectives and commitment of local and regional authorities,” Mr. Guterres said during this meeting.

The group will work for a year and meet with Mr. Guterres three times, it said in a statement posted on the United Nations website. “The United Nations Human Settlement Program (UN-Habitat) will provide administrative support to the group,” it said.

This announcement comes shortly after the Adaptation Futures 2023 conference on climate change adaptation, held October 2-6 in Montreal.

Ms. Plante was also present at the end of September at the Climate Week in New York, where she notably took part in a roundtable on ecological transition at the United Nations headquarters.
