A rain of lightning. Swiss police had to admit on Monday, November 27, an embarrassing mistake in a country that has made precision a commercial argument. Four poorly calibrated radar devices mistakenly flashed nearly 10,000 drivers on the streets of Bern in just over a month. Due to a programming error in the software, the four new radars detected so many violations that they alerted the Bern cantonal police.
“A total of 9,604 incorrect measurements were registered between September 12, 2023 and October 19, 2023. “All those affected will receive a letter in the coming days and around 6,000 fines paid will be refunded,” the police said, without calling the amounts unjustified.
Officials found an above-average number of violations at all four affected device locations and “more and more affected people have come forward.” The authorities therefore again asked the Federal Metrology Institute, which had validated the first configuration, to carry out checks. It turned out that the measured speed was too high. “These four devices are the only ones used in Switzerland in this configuration and therefore the only ones affected by this error,” the police said.
