Switzerland: “Dangerous” shooter arrested after killing two people

After a few hours on the run and an extensive manhunt, Swiss police arrested a “dangerous” man suspected of killing two people and injuring another in the southwestern Swiss town of Sion on Monday.

“The police system put in place made it possible to arrest the alleged perpetrator of the shooting by agents of the Crans-Montana Intercommunal Police when he was in the St-Léonard region at 3:43 p.m.,” explains the Valais cantonal police in a press release.

At around 8:00 a.m. (07:00 GMT) on Monday morning, the suspected 36-year-old gunman shot a 34-year-old woman for the first time in Sion.

“The murderer would have harassed her several times in order to build a relationship with her,” believes the regional daily Le Nouvelliste, pointing out that legal proceedings have been initiated against the shooter on this issue.

The second fatally shot victim, a 41-year-old man, was the manager of a local company where the shooter worked, the daily said.

The injured woman was a 49-year-old secretary at the same company who tried to raise the alarm.

Incidents of this kind are rare in Switzerland and the police have used considerable resources to find the perpetrator as quickly as possible.

The cantonal public prosecutor's office opened an investigation into “auxiliary murder”.
