Switzerland officially announced this Wednesday (4) its support for the Amazon Fund through an agreement signed this afternoon between the two countries. The first contribution from the Swiss government is R$30 million and will be transferred immediately to Brazil, as provided for in the agreement.
The ceremony took place at the Espaço Oscar Niemeyer on the Esplanada dos Ministérios in Brasília and brought together representatives of both countries.
The Amazon Fund is one of the main sources of financing for environmental protection measures in the region. Germany and Norway are currently the main donors (Read more below).
“The Amazon fund is today and will remain the largest fund in the world in these fifteen years. For us, actions like these that we are signing today are very important, which show and signal the importance of continuing to implement and exercise this super important action [de preservação da Amazônia]”, explained the director of BNDES, Tereza Campello.
On this occasion, the exhibition “The SwissBrazilian Heritage in the Amazon: Art, Science and Sustainability” about the country’s historical partnership with the Amazon was opened.
The event was attended by Culture Minister Margareth Menezes, the Swiss Ambassador to Brazil, Pietro Lazzeri, and the Social and Environmental Director of the National Development Bank (BNDES), Tereza Campello.
“Switzerland is the first country to have bilateral CO2 agreements and Brazil has enormous potential in this sense. Finding solutions and working with Brazilian partners is our mission,” explained the Swiss ambassador.
