MADRID, 7 December (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Swiss Minister of the Interior, Alain Berset, was elected the country’s new president after a vote in parliament this Wednesday, for which he is expected to be sworn in in 2023, replacing Ignazio Cassis.
According to the “Tages-Anzeiger”, the vote resulted in 140 yes votes from a total of 181 MPs. It is the second time he has served as the country’s president, a position he previously held between January and December 2018.
The Swiss ministers assume the presidency for one year and on a rotating basis. In office, they chair cabinet meetings and perform ceremonial duties. The head of state is not the Federal President, but according to the constitution this competence lies with the Federal Council, which performs the functions of the heads of state and government. In the event of a tie in the Council, the President casts the casting vote.
