Amid a dramatic escalation of East-West tensions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine today, Putin has ordered Russia’s nuclear forces to be on high alert.

The order means he wants Russia’s nuclear weapons prepared for increased readiness for launch.

Amid worrying developments, the Ukrainian president’s office said a delegation would meet with Russian officials as Moscow troops approached Kiev.

In citing the Nuclear Warning Directive, Putin cites not only alleged statements by NATO members, but also heavy financial sanctions imposed by the West.

Putin told his defense minister and the army’s chief of staff to put nuclear deterrence forces on a “special combat duty regime.”

He said: “Western countries are not only taking hostile action against our country in the economic sphere, but also senior officials from leading NATO member states have made aggressive statements against our country.”

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Putin was resorting to a model he had used in the weeks before the invasion of Ukraine.

She said it was “to produce threats that do not exist to justify further aggression”.

She said: “The global community and the American people need to look at it through this lens. We’ve seen him do this over and over.

She told ABC’s “This Week” that Russia was not under threat from NATO or Ukraine.

She said: “This is all a model from President Putin and we will stand up … we have the ability to defend ourselves, but we also need to call out what we see here.”

Prior to Russia’s invasion, Putin threatened to retaliate brutally against all nations intervening in the conflict in Ukraine and raised the specter of nuclear power.

The US ambassador to the United Nations responded to news from Moscow while appearing on a Sunday news program.

Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said: “President Putin continues to escalate this war in a way that is completely unacceptable.

“And we must continue to condemn his actions in the strongest, strongest possible way.”
