Taipei will treat a Beijing blockade as an act of war and not surrender, a Taiwanese security official told Britain’s Portal news agency.

He dismissed any notion of “ambiguity” in the case of Beijing’s capture of the Kinmen and Matsu archipelagos.

PROCEED AFTER RECOMMENDATIONS

“A blockade is an act of war. Taking a coastal island is an act of war,” the anonymous official stressed, noting that Taipei believes Beijing will not take any of these measures at the moment.

“Your only object of concern [das ilhas costeiras] is to force us to negotiate or surrender. But we will not give up or negotiate.”

According to the source, China could hold major military drills near Taiwan in 2023 ahead of Taiwan’s elections in early 2024, as well as conduct militia boat incursions or cyberattacks. The official therefore urged Washington to dissuade Beijing from doing so.

In early August, Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, visited Taiwan despite warnings from Beijing, prompting China to begin largescale drills in the territory and sanctioning Taiwanese officials, the senior US official and her family, and later American contractors who supply the selfgoverning island with weapons.

China views Taiwan, the island that has been selfgoverning since 1949, as a breakaway territory that will one day be reunited with the mainland, and urges other countries to adhere to the oneChina principle formalized in the 1970s at the UN Republic of China is China’s only legitimate representative.
