Taliban rejects demands to respect women’s rights

The Taliban, the ruling Islamist militant in Afghanistan, has rejected recent international calls for respect for women’s rights in the country. The government cannot allow any action that violates the legal system of Islamic Sharia, it said in a statement on Saturday. Taliban spokesman Sabiullah Mujahid stressed that the government is trying to regulate all matters in light of Sharia law.

UN Security Council calls for end to crackdown

He urged the international community to show understanding for the religious requirements of traditional Afghan society and not link humanitarian aid with politics. On Friday, eleven member countries of the UN Security Council called on the Taliban to immediately end all oppression of women and girls. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) recently rejected the Taliban’s claim that their treatment of women and girls was in line with Sharia law.
