Taraneh Alidoosti: Iranian actor posts picture without headscarf in support of anti-government protests

Leading Iranian actress Taraneh Alidoosti posted a picture of herself without the mandatory hijab on Instagram to show her support for the ongoing anti-government protests that began in Iran almost two months ago.

In the photo, Alidoosti is holding a sign that reads “Women, Life, Freedom” in Kurdish, a popular slogan used at the demonstrations, which were largely led by women.

“Your latest absence, the songbird migration, is not the end of this rebellion,” Alidoosti wrote in her Instagram post.

The actor, who starred in the Oscar-winning film The Salesman, has previously shared a number of dissident social media posts and has been a public supporter of the demonstrations. She is also known as a defender of women’s rights in Iran.

Earlier this week, in another Instagram post, Alidoosti vowed to stay in her homeland, saying, “I’m the one staying and I have no intention of leaving at all.”

“I will stand by the families of the prisoners and murdered and demand their rights,” says Alidoosti in it Instagram post.

“I will fight for my homeland. I will pay any price to stand up for my rights,” she added.

Alidoosti is one of several Iranian actresses who are shedding their mandatory hijab to protest the clerical establishment.

On Wednesday, Iranian actors Donya Madani and Khazar Massoumi also posted photos of themselves without a headscarf on Instagram.

The Islamic Republic faces one of its largest and unprecedented demonstrations of dissent following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman from Iran who was allegedly arrested for improperly wearing her hijab.

Since her death on September 16, protesters across Iran have dealt with a range of grievances with the regime. Meanwhile, the Iranian authorities have stepped up efforts to end the insurgency.

Around 1,000 people have been charged in Tehran province over their alleged involvement in the protests, state news agency IRNA reported.

In all, up to 14,000 people were arrested across the country, including journalists, activists, lawyers and educators. Among them is the dissident Iranian rap artist Toomaj Salehi, who has been charged with crimes punishable by death, according to Iranian state media.
