Now, let’s not say he’s a gritty talker… Earlier this week, Kanye West sparked a little controversy — oh no, not that. Rather, he claimed Django Unchained was his idea, saying: “[Quentin] and Jamie, they got the idea from me because I pitched the idea for Django to Jamie Foxx and Quentin Tarantino as a video for ‘Gold Digger’…then Tarantino made a movie out of it.” This is, as we expected, too 100% wrong.
Quentin Tarantino has been open about his influences — but Kanye West isn’t on the same list as Sergio Leone and Brian DePalma. Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! This week, to promote his new book Cinema Speculation, Quentin Tarantino shut down Kanye West’s allegations. “It’s not true that Kanye West came up with the idea of Django and then told me about it, and I said, ‘Hey, wow, that’s a really great idea. Let me take Kanye’s idea and turn it into Django Unchained.’ That didn’t happen.”
However, Tarantino clarified where Kanye West might have come from. “He wanted to do a huge movie version of ‘The College Dropout’ like he did the album – so he wanted to get big directors to do different tracks on the album and then release it as this huge movie… He had an idea for a video. I think it was for the ‘Gold Digger’ video that he was going to be a slave… It sounded really cool. At least that’s what he means.”
In the 20-minute chat with Jimmy Kimmel, Quentin Tarantino also addressed being a parent of two, how Wilt Chamberlain could have been his stepfather, and of course his new book, which Kanye West will most certainly never read.
