Fall in love with samba and forró to celebrate São João

In Salvador, the arraia is spreading through the neighborhoods, but if you want to take a day trip, there’s still time.

Have you ever accompanied a Samba Junino? Cultural expression, truly soteropolitan, makes the difference in Salvador, with a mix of carnival atmosphere and that of the June celebrations. The Arrastões, the intangible heritage of Salvador, bring together friends and acquaintances from different neighborhoods. And this year the event has a special program on Sunday (25th) at the Dique do Tororó.

Groups from different parts of the city will move from Avenida Vasco da Gama towards Dique, where a special show led by singersongwriter Tatau with guests Ninha and Reinaldo will take place. The trio promises a decent repertoire of June sambas.

“It was a special request from the mayor to give our June program a great finish. We are now in the final stages of shaping this moment and I guarantee that it will offer everything our São João demands, with tradition, music, beauty and celebration,” emphasizes Saltur President Isaac Edington.

However, if forró, sertanejo and other related rhythms are your thing, the historic center and exhibition park are the right choice where the city’s June events are concentrated. From Praça da Sé to Santo Antônio Além Carmo, there are many Northeastern trios, typical food and drink stalls and performances by June dance groups, as well as shows by small groups or artists such as Gerônimo, Armandionho and Geraldo Azevedo on Saturday’s program (24).

But if the itch gets the better of you and you want to venture out, there are options very close to Salvador and even some further afield but worth the adventure of a day trip. Good Saint John.
