Taylor Swift and Morgan Wallen were among the top winners at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night.
Swift entered the night as a finalist (as the BMAs call their nominees) in most categories – an incredible 20 nods. She took home a total of 10 awards, including the coveted Top Female Artist, Top Male Artist, and Top Billboard 200 Artist.
In her acceptance speech, Swift thanked her fans and said, “Nothing happens without you.” She added, “I feel like the luckiest girl to have you around and caring about the music I make.”
SZA and Wallen were the second-largest finalists with 17 entries in 16 categories. Wallen had a breakthrough night, becoming the night’s most awarded artist with 11 trophies, including Best Male Artist, Best Hot 100 Artist, Best Country Artist and Best Billboard 200 Album. SZA took home four awards, including Best R&B Artist and Best R&B Album.
Wallen, who entered the night as the highest-profile male finalist and became the night’s most lauded star, sang “98 Braves.” His performance at last year’s BBMAs was his first appearance at a major awards show after he was caught on camera using a racial slur.
This year’s event was broadcast by NBC on the awards show’s official social channels and website. The show normally takes place in May, but was postponed to November to fill the American Music Awards’ vacated slot.
Karol G, who accepted the award for Top Latin Artist and Top Latin Touring Artist at the start of the show, gave the first performance of the evening, singing “QLONA,” “Labios Mordidos” and “OJOS FERRARI” on a filled stage with water splashing them to maximum effect, accompanied by dancers circling through the water features.
Other artists included David Guetta and Bebe Rexha, who performed their hit “I’m Good,” which sampled Eiffel 65’s “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” and won the award for best dance/electronic song. Rexha sang a stripped down version of the hit in a leather dress and then began rendition of her song “One in a Million.”
K-pop superstars NewJeans also made an appearance, singing their hit song “Super Shy” with an entourage of backup dancers who performed their choreography with razor-sharp precision. They then sang their track “OMG” on stage in tundra costumes in the middle of a snowy, cloudy wonderland. After accepting the award for Best K-Pop Artist in the World and thanking their fans, Bunnies and each other, they said, “We always look out for each other. Inspire, help, believe, but most of all we form that unbreakable friendship without which we wouldn’t be NewJeans.”
Other artists included Peso Pluma (who was joined on stage by Mike Tyson), Stray Kids and Tate McRae.
A big highlight of the show was Mariah Carey’s first live performance of “All I Want for Christmas Is You” of the season, proving that the holidays started a few days earlier than Thanksgiving this year. Dancers on ice skates joined her
Other notable winners included Drake with five awards, Zach Bryan with four, and Bad Bunny, Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus with three awards each.
The Billboard Music Awards are presented by Dick Clark Productions. DCP is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge, which also owns .
