Taylor Swift took to social media to say she was “overwhelmed with grief” after a fan died before her Eras Tour show began in Brazil on Friday.
“I can’t believe I’m writing these words, but it’s with a broken heart that I say we lost a fan before my show tonight,” Swift wrote in a statement shared on her Instagram Story. “I can’t tell you how devastated I am about this. I have very little information about her being so incredibly beautiful and far too young.”
She continued: “I won’t be able to talk about it on stage because I feel overwhelmed with grief if I even try to talk about it.” I want to say now that I feel this loss deeply and My broken heart goes out to her family and friends. That’s the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil.”

It was the first of three concerts in Rio de Janeiro as part of their international world tour, following stops in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Folha de S. Paulo, a Brazilian daily, reported that 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides fainted and was taken to a hospital, where she later died of cardiac arrest.

Footage captured during the concert performances had Swift interrupting the performance to point out fans in the audience who needed water, and at one point he could be seen throwing water into the crowd. “There are people who need water right here, maybe 30, 35, 40 feet back,” she said midway through a set. “Whoever is responsible for giving them this is just making sure that happens. Can I get a signal that you know where they are?”
This is a developing story.
