The AMC distributes Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour came back yesterday, Thursday, around noon after a three-day break and drove in $5.9 million per industry estimate. This brings the Sam Wrench-directed concert film’s total to $98.7 million from 3,855 theaters. Apple Original Films is now responsible for major cinema releases with Martin Scorsese Flower Moon Killerdistributed by Paramount, signed $2.6 million in previews that began at 2 p.m. Why so early? Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro’s film is 3 hours and 26 minutes long.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” includes Ford vs. Ferrari with $2.1 million and Elvis with $3.5 million. Elvis opened at 2 hours and 39 minutes to $31.2 million, while Ford vs. Ferrari opened at 2 hours and 32 minutes to $31.4 million.
Heading into the weekend, many are predicting Swift will post a minimal profit of $27 million and lose -70% in its second weekend. However, no one was able to 100% assess the development of this young, femininely distorted image. While we heard most of the pre-sales were for last weekend, we’ll see if the Swifties show up again this weekend.
However, with the fall box office season upended by the actors’ strike and actors’ lack of opportunities for advancement, many are optimistic about the prospects of “Killers of the Flower Moon” opening in excess of $20 million in its first weekend -dollars will achieve. That’s just above the $19 million opening weekend average for a DiCaprio Scorsese film, by the way. Paramount has ensured that all Imax and PLF screens are at full blast for this weekend’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Some wouldn’t be surprised if it beat Swift. The last time the actors promoted the film was at its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. With the wattage of films like The Creator and A Haunting in Venice sapped by actors’ strikes, how could a feature-length film like Killers of the Flower Moon actually break through? Many attribute the potential advantage to DiCaprio’s star power, the fact that Scorsese (who attracts moviegoers) has been out there advertising, a vacancy for such marquee stars, and the fact that the film is based on a best-selling novel by based on David Grann. Among several exclusives Deadline has reported on for Killers of the Flower Moon, Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas won the book rights back in 2016, paying $5 million for them. Apple won the auction for the Scorsese-DiCaprio-De Niro package, the film cost around $200 million or more after tax credits in Oklahoma.
The first audience exits from Comscore/Screen Engine already show that there is no divide between moviegoers and critics when it comes to “Killers of the Flower Moon.” While film reviewers rate the film as “fresh” at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, PostTrak gives it 4 1/2 stars, 87% positive and 72% recommended. While men over 25 represented half of last night’s audience and women over 25 represented another 30%, it was men under 25 who gave the film the highest marks at 13%, 95%. Overall it was 64% of the boys. These demonstrations will fluctuate throughout the weekend.
Apple Original Films has not yet set a streaming date for the film as it aims for a long theatrical window during awards season.
