Taylor Swift may not have taken home a trophy at last Sunday's Golden Globes, but the singer did pick up another award; his film went into the record books as the most successful music documentary of all time.
With sales of more than $8 million from China, Taylor Swift's film crossed the $261.6 million mark.
The previous record holder was none other than Michael Jackson with the posthumous documentary This Is It from 2009. This film grossed $261.2 million at the global box office.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it was the film's recent release in China that helped propel the film to the number one spot of all-time concert films and documentaries. With the $8.7 million in revenue earned in China after its release on December 31, The Eras Tour film has surpassed the $261.6 million mark.
Strong opening weekend
The Eras Tour film scored most of its record-breaking box office on its opening weekend last October, when it grossed $92.8 million in North America and $30.7 million internationally for a total of $123.5 million.
This is the biggest opening ever for a concert film. Previously, it was Canadian singer Justin Bieber's “Never Say Never” that held this record, earning $73 million when the film was released in 2011.
