The re-recorded version of Taylor Swift’s album 1989 sold better than the original in its first week of release in North America.

The record, titled 1989 (Taylor’s Version), rose to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart and became the first LP to reach one million units sold in the first week of release twice, in 2014 and 2023. The new album beats the first It sold for a week in 2014, making it his first new recording to surpass the original album with 1.6 million units.

1989 (Taylor’s Version) also had the best album sales week of 2023, beating Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) and her other album Midnights, giving her the top three best-selling albums of the year. And that’s not all: Taylor Swift is the first artist to have 13 number one albums in this ranking upon release. She also extended her record as the artist with the most weeks at number one on the Billboard 200.

The Shake It Off singer began re-recording all of the albums she released on her first record label, Big Machine, after it was sold to music manager Scooter Braun in 2019. After this takeover by Justin Bieber’s artist agent, the musician, who had already fallen out with him, committed to re-recording her first six albums in order to regain control of her masters. Taylor Swift has so far re-released Red, Fearless, Speak Now and 1989.
