Taymour Jumblatt will lead the Progressive Socialist Party in Lebanon

Beirut, June 25 (Prensa Latina) MP Taymour Jumblatt will head the Lebanese Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) from today after being elected president of the main political force of the Druze community in Cedar Land.

By acclamation, Taymour will succeed his father, Walid Jumblatt, who has led the organization since the late 1970s and announced his retirement a month ago.

On the occasion of the 49th Congress of the PSP, the election of the leader of the Parliamentary bloc “Democratic Encounter” will assert the leadership of the power party of the Jumblatt family, one of the figures represented on the national political scene.

In his speech, Taymour said the PSP will continue to be the party fighting to preserve Lebanon’s institutions and genuine dialogue, “not a land of emptiness and obstruction.”

As part of the conclave, Zafer Nasser won the post of general secretary of the PSP and Habouba Aoun and Zaher Raad were elected vice-presidents.

At the same time, Nashat Al-Hasaniyah, Muhammad Basbous, Rima Saliba, Marwa Abu Faraj, Lama Hariz, Rina Al-Hasaniyah, Kamel Al-Ghusseini and Hussein Idris received a vote for board membership.

In the current parliament, Taymour and the PSP lead the Democratic Encounter bloc, which includes MPs Marwan Hamadeh, Akram Chehayeb, Bilal Abdullah, Wael Abu Faour, Hadi Abu Al-Hassan, Faisal Al-Sayegh and Raji Al-Saad.

The political organization was founded in 1949 by Kamal Jumblatt (1917–1977), Walid’s father and Taymour’s grandfather, and is considered one of the leading figures in Lebanese and Arab patriotic life.
