Teachers in England should not have to accept requests from students seeking to “socially transition” at school, according to new transgender guidelines issued by England’s Department for Education (DFE) in response to “the complex phenomenon of the increasing number of children who “Ask Your Own Questions” was published by Gender.”

The draft guidelines state that if a student changes, teachers and staff will not face sanctions if they do not adopt new pronouns. Additionally, teachers in England should tell parents whether their child wants to change their gender identity at school, arguing that “significant decisions” that affect a child’s future should not be made without parental involvement.

The Gender Questioning Children guidance states that this should happen in the “preponderance of cases”, but in “exceptionally rare cases” teachers may decide to withhold information if its disclosure could pose a “significant risk” to a child, to take damage.

The guidance is based on a set of five principles for dealing with such requests and states that schools and colleges “have a legal duty to protect and promote the welfare of all children” and should be “respectful and tolerant places where bullying is never tolerated.” and “have specific goals.” legal obligations that depend on a child's biological sex,” “Parents should not be excluded from decisions made by a school or college in relation to applications for a child's 'social transition'” and that “There is no general obligation to social transition'.”

Education Minister Gillian Keegan said in a press release announcing the guidelines that they put the best interests of all children first and “remove any confusion about the protections that must apply to biological sex and same-sex spaces and make clear that safety and Protection is guaranteed.” “School must always be the main concern for all children.”

The same sentiment was reflected in the guidance, which said schools should also proceed “carefully” when making such decisions as “it is clear that social transition is not a neutral act”.

Kemi Badenoch, Britain's women and equalities minister, said the guidelines aimed to give teachers and school leaders “more confidence in dealing with an issue that has been abused by campaigners who misrepresent the law”.

“It makes clear that schools do not have to accept a child's desire to socially transition and that teachers or students should not be pressured to use different pronouns,” she said. “We also recognize how important it is for parents to be informed and involved in the decisions that impact their children’s lives.”
