Teachers in Montreal, Quebec and Gatineau on indefinite general strike starting November 23

As of November 23, teachers in Montreal, Quebec and Gatineau are on indefinite general strike.

While the Common Front union members go on strike on November 6th, the teachers of the Autonomous Education Federation (FAE) are bringing in the big guns: an indefinite general strike will be declared from November 23rd if no agreement is reached. concluded with Quebec by then, announces the trade union federation.

This date was set on Thursday during a meeting of the FAE Federal Negotiating Council.

The FAE represents 65,000 teachers, more than 40% of teachers in the province. Its members teach in primary and secondary schools in the Montreal, Quebec, Outaouais, Laurentides, Estrie and Montérégie regions (see details below).

Unlike the Common Front union members, this union federation has introduced only one means of pressure, the indefinite general strike, which will begin from November 23 if no significant progress is made at the negotiating table.

The Legault government therefore has 20 days to prevent the triggering of an indefinite general strike by FAE teachers.

“An indefinite general strike is the last resort to exert pressure, but given the discrepancy between the government’s will and the attitude at the negotiating table, teachers have reached this point. We have to act now,” explains Mélanie Hubert, President of the FAE.

According to the latter, the government’s lack of understanding of the suffering of teachers and their desertion will lead to even more devastating consequences for the quality of education in the coming decades.

Occasional strike

For their part, other public school teachers are represented by the Federation of Education Unions (FSE-CSQ), which is part of the Common Front, as are the unions representing support staff and professionals in the school network.

This group has a strike mandate that could extend to an indefinite general strike.

However, for now, the Joint Front has decided to hold occasional strike days, the first of which will take place on Monday, November 6th.

In most schools affected by this strike, lessons and daycare care will be stopped in the morning.
