NoAfter the explosion of a tanker truck in Afghanistan, the death toll more than doubled. In the well-known Salang Tunnel accident, the death toll rose to at least 31 on Monday, a health ministry spokesman said. Another 37 people were reportedly injured. The tunnel in the Hindu Kush mountains, about 90 kilometers north of the capital Kabul, is the most important traffic axis connecting the south and north of the country.
According to initial findings, “technical problems” must have been the cause of the explosion. The fire also spread to other vehicles. According to authorities, the flames were brought under control several hours after the incident. The approximately 2.7km tunnel, which links Baghland and Parwan provinces, remained closed on Monday. There is no information about the financial loss.
