The United States government prefers some migrants with Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This classification gives security to the foreigner arriving in the country so that he will not be deported.
Anyone interested in this treatment must have a specific nationality and demonstrate that they face real risk if they are returned to their country of origin. Temporary protection is also granted to non-citizens who need to comply with immigration regulations.
The Congressional Research Service (CRS) reported that more than 50% of protected citizens come from places with difficult political situations. Nationalities affected by these problems include El Salvador, Honduras, Haiti and Venezuela.
Statistics from March last year showed that more than 350,000 immigrants were in temporary detention. This population actually came from 12 parts of the world.
The causes that enable protection
The migrating population can apply for TPS if they claim to have been victims of a natural disaster due to a meteorological, seismic or epidemic phenomenon. There are also temporary conditions related to a special event in the user’s country that may endanger his life.
Military conflicts due to civil wars or threats to physical integrity are other important causes for the supply of TPS. To be selected for preliminary care, belonging to one of the countries characterized by its complexity is required.
In addition, the applicant must remain on U.S. soil or be absent for reasons beyond their control. The authorities draw attention to the fact that due to the delay in petition deadlines, no TPS can be delivered.
If an immigrant interrupts the TPS process, they must apply for an extension at the time of registration and provide valid evidence. Persons with a criminal record also do not receive temporary protection.
