It took the competition favorite and 42nd player in the world 1h31 to defeat the WTA’s 196th racket and reach the quarterfinals.
The winner hit four aces but committed just as many double faults. She was particularly perfect on break points, managing to steal serve from her rival four times on as many occasions. For her part, Zakharova broke once.
In the next stage, Andreescu meets Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, 5th seed and 60th in the world.
Two endless rounds
On the German side, Vasek Pospisil won two tie breaks against Mats Rosenkranz in two identical sets 7-6(2) in the round of 16 of the Challenger in Koblenz.
The British-Colombian needed 2h 17min to get rid of his qualifying opponent. The German, 446th batter in the world, fought off the third seed for as long as he could but the veteran showed his strength of character.
Pospisil took advantage of Rosenkranz’s struggles on his second serve to win 66% of rallies. He was more effective in return, but also with the balls in hand, making 15 aces.
In the quarter-finals, the 32-year-old tennis player meets another German, Louis Wessels (306th), who surprised Frenchman Hugo Grenier (148th) in the preliminary round.
