WTA Big jump in the rankings for Leylah Fernandez

Tennis: Leylah Fernandez continues to make progress in Hong Kong

Quebec’s Leylah Fernandez reached the third round of the tennis tournament in Hong Kong on Thursday, winning 3-6, 6-1 and 6-3 against Russia’s Mirra Andreeva in the second round.

The winner worked hard to get rid of the 50th place holder in the women’s ranking as she spent almost two hours on the field. Thanks to six breaks in eleven attempts, Fernandez (60th) took revenge for Andreeva’s failure in Madrid earlier this year. Despite the triumph, it wasn’t perfect for the woman, who conceded her serve four times.

The Maple Leaf athlete had advanced to the second round after Victoria Azarenka was forfeited during a duel in which she shared first two round honors.

In her next match, Fernandez will face 18-year-old Czech Linda Fruhvirtova, 88th in the world rankings. This will be the first meeting between the two women in the WTA tournament.
