Tense moment: Pilot struggles to land a passenger plane with faulty flaps before it hits the runway in a cloud of smoke in Lanzarote after a flight from the UK

  • Frightened passengers experienced a near miss as the plane struggled to land properly in Lanzarote

This is the tense moment a pilot struggles to land a passenger plane with broken flaps before it hits the runway in a cloud of smoke.

Frightened passengers on the TUI flight from Exeter to the Canary Islands experienced a near miss when the plane struggled to land properly in Lanzarote due to a problem with one of the flaps.

The plane is seen hovering over the runway before abruptly hitting the ground, producing a cloud of smoke upon impact before coming to a stop.

Air traffic controllers (ATC) reported that after being informed of the problem by the pilot, they ordered the aircraft to wait west of Lanzarote while they diverted other aircraft and cleared the landing approach.

“Once ready, we positioned flight BY6462 for a direct approach to runway 03, landed and cleared the runway without incident.” “After it left the runway, it was inspected by firefighters to ensure an emergency landing was required.” said ATC on Thursday about the incident.

The flaps on the back of the aircraft's wings are used during takeoff to lift the aircraft off the ground. They also help the pilot with maneuvers and slow the aircraft when landing.

Earlier this month, a holidaymaker was put in a headlock by police and forcefully forced off a Ryanair flight after a flight from Luton to Lanzarote was diverted to Portugal because of his behaviour.

The man, believed to be British, was forcibly removed from the plane by a dozen Portuguese police officers as other passengers looked on in astonishment.

A fellow passenger who filmed the shocking scenes at Faro airport told Web: “There was a group of men who appeared to have been drinking and were harassing some female passengers.”

“When things started to get a little out of control, one of the stewards tried to intervene and was knocked over.”

“At this point the captain warned the Tannoy that unacceptable behavior would not be tolerated and we would divert to Portugal if it did not stop.”

“But the excitement didn’t subside and 20 minutes later we were told, with no further information, that we would be landing in twenty minutes.”

After the pilot stabilizes the aircraft, it turns left towards the airport. Air traffic controllers (ATC) reported that after being informed of the problem by the pilot, they ordered the aircraft to wait west of Lanzarote while they diverted other aircraft and cleared the approach for landing

“The man seen fighting in the video originally got out voluntarily, but for some reason got back on the plane and was then forcibly removed by police and put in a headlock.”

“This man was one of several who were taken away,” the passenger said.

“It was pretty shocking to see. “We’re all a little shaken.”

Footage filmed in the cabin showed several passengers with phones outstretched, watching in amazement as police dragged the man down the aisle.

The man is seen struggling against the officers, prompting them to put him in a headlock to subdue him.

Another officer is seen holding his arm in front of him and dragging him toward the exit.

The plane left London's Luton Airport at 8am and was scheduled to arrive in Lanzarote at 12.15pm local time on January 19.

However, the plane was instead diverted to the Portuguese airport and landed in Faro in Portugal's Algarve region at around 10:50 a.m. local time, where police boarded it shortly afterwards.

In a statement to Web, Ryanair said: “This flight from London Luton to Lanzarote was diverted to Faro when passengers on board became disruptive.”

“The crew called the police beforehand and the plane was met on arrival by the local police, who removed the disruptive passengers.” The flight continued to Lanzarote with a short delay. This is now a matter for the local police.'
