North Korea tested several missiles last week, including a potentially malfunctioning ICBM and hundreds of artillery shells at sea, while South Korea and the United States conducted six-day air exercises that ended on Saturday.

“An Open Provocation”

Dubbed the “Vigilant Storm,” the drills are the largest joint exercises ever conducted by the United States and South Korea. An “open provocation aimed at deliberately raising tensions” and “a dangerous warfare exercise of an extremely aggressive nature” against North Korea, the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army said in a statement quoted by the official KCNA news agency.

North Korea has promised a “sustained, decisive and overwhelming” response.
