Tensions with the USA and elections in Taiwan characterize the week in China

Beijing accused Washington of unfairly repressing domestic semiconductor companies and described those actions as a sign of economic intimidation.

The State Department rejected restrictions on Chinese telecommunications equipment makers over alleged threats to the security of online information.

The United States has placed these companies on a blacklist that prohibits this type of equipment from entering the North American market.

In this scenario, the trade ministers of China, Wang Wentao, and the United States, Gina Raimondo, spoke by telephone on topics of respective interest.

This was confirmed by Xinhua News Agency, adding in its report that both parties were focused on implementing the consensus reached by the two leaders at the meeting in San Francisco last November.

This week, China and the United States took another step toward easing military ties during the 17th political coordination meeting between their defense ministries.

However, tensions over the Taiwan issue remain, and Beijing called on the North American side to carefully and appropriately handle issues related to the region, stop official exchanges and stop sending false signals to separatist forces.

Taiwan's leadership election ended today with a victory for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) candidate, Lai Ching-te, a separatist defender of the island's independence.

This week, the presidents of China, Xi Jinping, and Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, announced the elevation of bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership here.

The two leaders witnessed the signing of several bilateral cooperation documents within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as in areas such as disaster management, economy and technology, sustainable development and infrastructure.

Xi Jinping also recently called on the European Union (EU) to build more bridges for cooperation in view of the chaotic international situation.

“Both parties should work more closely together to promote a fair multipolarity in the world and an inclusive and beneficial economic globalization,” the president said during a meeting here with Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre de Croo.

China reported this week an espionage case linked to Britain's MI6 intelligence service, which accessed classified information from the Asian giant.

According to the Ministry of State Security, in 2015 MI6 established a “cooperative intelligence relationship” with a foreigner named Huang, who collected sensitive information and identified potential individuals for recruitment.
