Tesla is now aiming to reopen Giga Shanghai on April 18 after a three-week shutdown

Tesla is now targeting the reopening of Gigafactory Shanghai on Monday, April 18 after being closed for about three weeks and missing the production of over 40,000 electric vehicles.

Shanghai has seen a notable surge in COVID-19 infections over the past month, and authorities have enacted some drastic lockdown measures that have been in place for weeks in a bid to stem the growth.

This led to Tesla having to close Gigafactory Shanghai on March 28th.

Tesla was supposed to resume production the next weekend but couldn’t get it up and running due to its inability to recruit enough workers and suppliers.

The automaker was expected to try again later in the week to restart production, but was unable to get it up and running again.

The second phase of the city’s two-phase lockdown was due to end on April 7, but authorities have extended it indefinitely in light of the ongoing spread, despite measures in place.

This led to great uncertainty about when Tesla might reopen its vital factory.

Now, Reuters is reporting that Tesla has been given the green light by authorities to reopen on Monday, April 18:

“Tesla is preparing to resume production at its Shanghai plant on Monday after a three-week hiatus after receiving the green light from local authorities, two people familiar with the matter said.”

Should that finally happen, it would mean that the Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai would be shut down for three weeks. With a production capacity of around 2,000 vehicles per day, Tesla will lose over 40,000 vehicles.

In addition, Tesla is to resume production with only one shift and gradually ramp up production. Therefore, the factory standstill was felt at least for the rest of the month.

As we previously reported, this will no doubt significantly impact Tesla’s performance in the second quarter of 2022, and likely even break the company’s streak of record deliveries for seven consecutive quarters.
