Tesla ships first Model Y vehicles with 4680 batteries from Giga Texas

After the Cyber Rodeo grand opening event, Tesla officially delivered the first production Model Y vehicles with 4680 batteries from Gigafactory Texas.

On Friday, April 8th, Elon Musk officially announced that the first production units of the Model Y had been shipped. He thanked the Tesla team for their hard work. Some of the new Model Y owners have already shared their joy with the community online.

Over the weekend, Tesla engineer Regan Janssen announced on LinkedIn that she had received the first Model Y, produced in Giga Texas, with 4,680 battery cells. Janssen happens to be an Engineering Process Technician at Tesla. She just started her Tesla career last month.

Janssen didn’t elaborate much on her new Tesla Model Y in her LinkedIn post. She has not disclosed the variant she received. Janssen also didn’t specify how many Model Y units shipped with 4680 battery cells.

However, it makes sense that a Tesla employee would have received one of the first Model Y vehicles from Giga Texas. Tesla’s first deliveries are usually handed over to employees. However, during the Cyber Rodeo, Tesla introduced the Model Y Standard Range with 4680 cells. The debut of the base Model Y with 4680 cells hinted that Tesla may have started production at Giga Texas with the Standard Range variant. However, Tesla usually starts with the performance variant.

Before the grand opening event of Giga Texas @TesLaw22 announced he expects to be delivered at Cyber Rodeo. “I got more than I ever expected! It’s wonderful,” he told Teslarati. As a result of his pre-Cyber Rodeo announcement, he had an order for a Model Y Long Range.

As Tesla Giga Texas ramps up production, more Tesla Model Y vehicles with 4,680 battery cells will be shipped to the United States. It would be interesting to test the differences between the Model Y with 4680 cells and the Model Y with Tesla’s other cells.

It seems that in the future Tesla will also reconsider the idea of mining and refining its own lithium for batteries. Lithium prices are skyrocketing, which may affect vehicle prices. Tesla has increased the price of its vehicle lineup several times over the past month.

The Teslarati team would love to hear from you. If you have any tips, let me know [email protected] or via Twitter @Writer_01001101.
